Morag in New York

Morag played to an enthusiastic audience
at Don't Tell Mama's, New York from Feb 21, 2003.

"Scottish singer Morag McLaren is a major talent with a terrific voice, and her comedy is bright, original and brilliant. She's sort of a Lily Tomlin in the depth and breadth of her portrayals, but the characters she depicts are all singers. Her voice has great range: from opera to musical comedy to a breathtaking Scottish folksong. This is a world class performer in a honed and seasoned act who will transport you to the highest level of cabaret delights."

Scottish singer and West End diva Morag McLaren made her New York cabaret debut last weekend at Mama's where she displayed a confident, legit voice and a delicious sense of humor. McLaren, who has starred as Carlotta in Phantom of the Opera and Mrs. Segstrom in A Little Night Music in London, started off on the road to an opera career and does a very funny bit about careening from one vocal classification to another, e.g., lyric to spinto to coloratura, etc. with hilarious results.
She has an impressive soprano that lends itself well to her wacky brand of comedy whether she's spoofing The Sound of Music or recalling Louisa Tetrazzini's Gilda in Rigoletto and seems a natural comic at heart. ...her patter is funny and she and her musical director, Bruce O'Neil, have a charming rapport together that's infectious. Perhaps the next time she crosses the Atlantic, McLaren will give us her acclaimed Dorothy Fields show, which has also been recorded as a CD.
